Delhi Police records statement of wrestling association chief in sexual harassment case

New Delhi (IANS) | Delhi Police has recorded the statement of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accused of sexual harassment of women wrestlers. A police officer gave this information on Friday. The source said that the police have also asked for some documents from him and if required, more statements will be taken.

Sources reveal that Singh has denied all the allegations leveled against him.

The police have also taken the statement of Vinod Tomar, assistant secretary of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), another accused in the case. He is named in the FIR lodged by the Delhi Police.

Also, the Delhi Police has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter in depth. The SIT has 10 officers including a woman Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP).

The team has been formed to collect information from various states on the basis of complaints filed by women wrestlers, the official said.

Prominent Indian wrestlers like Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Vinesh Phogat, who have won medals for the country at the Olympics and World Championships, have been protesting at Jantar Mantar against the WFI chief since April 23.

Farmers have also extended their support to the wrestlers and a large number of them arrived from Haryana and Punjab on Monday to join the wrestlers’ protest.

Last month, the Delhi Police had registered two separate First Information Reports (FIRs) against the WFI chief on the basis of allegations of sexual harassment. The first FIR pertains to allegations made by a minor and has been filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act along with relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for outraging modesty.

The second FIR focuses on a comprehensive investigation into the complaints made by the adult complainants, Taras. This includes relevant sections of the IPC relating to outraging the modesty.
