Delhi Airport: Flights canceled due to roof collapse at Delhi airport, passengers are facing huge problems IndiGo and SpiceJet flights affected due to suspension of operations after roof collapse at Delhi Airport Terminal 1 Flight operations were affected at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Friday as flight operations from the airport’s Terminal 1 were suspended till further orders after a part of the roof fell off at the terminal’s forecourt in the wee hours amid heavy rains. One person died and eight others were injured in the incident. Terminal 1 of IGIA is used only for domestic flights, while IndiGo and SpiceJet operate flights from this terminal. According to information provided by IGIA operator Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), IndiGo cancelled 62 departures and seven arrivals, while SpiceJet cancelled eight departures and four arrivals due to the suspension of operations at Terminal 1.
DIAL said in a statement, “As a precautionary measure, all flight operations from Terminal 1 have been suspended till further notice and have been rescheduled by the respective airlines to operate from Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 until operations are restored in the affected areas.” There are a total of three passenger terminals at IGIA, with Terminal 3 being the largest. In view of the disruption, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) announced measures to help passengers as well as handle the additional stress faced by Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 due to the temporary closure of Terminal 1. On the passenger convenience front, the measures include an advisory to all airlines to ensure that this situation does not lead to a steep increase in airfares, and IndiGo and SpiceJet have been directed to provide full refunds or alternative flights to those affected by flight cancellations. A 24/7 war room will be set up under the close monitoring of the Ministry of Civil Aviation. This war room will ensure full refund of cancelled flights or provide alternate travel route tickets as per availability. All refunds will be processed within the stipulated time of 7 days,” MoCA said in a statement. In a statement on Friday morning, the country’s largest airline said:
“IndiGo flight operations have been impacted due to structural damage at Terminal 1, Delhi Airport due to adverse weather conditions. This has led to cancellation of flights in Delhi, as passengers are unable to enter the terminal. Passengers already inside the terminal will be able to board their planned flights, but those flying later in the day will be given alternatives. Later, the airline announced that it was cancelling all its flights departing from Terminal 1 till midnight, while flights arriving at the terminal will be diverted to one of the other two terminals at IGIA. For flights departing from Terminal 1 after midnight, IndiGo has asked passengers to keep a close watch on the flight status. SpiceJet said all its flights scheduled to depart from Terminal 1 on Saturday will now depart from Terminal 3. Both IndiGo and SpiceJet said affected passengers can choose alternate flights or a full refund.
