Chennai: Man arrested for drugging nurse and stealing colleague’s gold chain

Chennai: Saidapet police have arrested a nurse at a government hospital. She is accused of drugging a colleague and stealing her gold chain. Approximately 48 grams of molten gold was recovered from her possession. The accused has been identified as Nancy Nisha, 37, a resident of Thandandar Nagar. The victim, Sunitha, 31, a resident of Adambakkam, works as a nurse with Nisha at the Government Children’s Hospital in Egmore. According to police, the incident occurred on October 10, 2025. Nisha allegedly insisted that Sunitha, who was under stress due to family circumstances, accompany her to Nisha’s home in Saidapet.

There, Sunitha drank the mushroom soup Nisha had given her, after which she fainted. Upon waking up around 7 p.m., Nisha said she had to leave early and dropped Sunitha off at Saidapet railway station on her two-wheeler. According to police, the incident occurred on October 10, 2025. Nisha allegedly insisted that Sunita, who was under stress due to family circumstances, accompany her to Nisha’s home in Saidapet. There, Sunita drank the mushroom soup Nisha had given her, after which she fainted. Upon waking around 7 p.m., Nisha said she had to leave immediately and dropped Sunita off on a two-wheeler at Saidapet railway station. During the investigation, it was revealed that Nisha had allegedly mixed an anesthetic in the soup.

Following her arrest on January 12, police discovered that Nisha had melted a stolen chain into a gold bar and pawned it at a pawn shop in Vyasarpadi, where it was recovered. Further police investigations revealed similar allegations against the accused. On November 15, 2025, Nisha is accused of administering an anesthetic to Thangammal, another fellow nurse at the same hospital. After Thangammal fainted, Nisha allegedly pretended to take her home safely in an auto-rickshaw and stole her plate chain weighing approximately 4.75 sovereigns during the trip. Nisha was arrested in that case and released on bail only last week. Following questioning in the drug-laced soup case, the arrested accused, Nancy Nisha, was produced in court on Monday. She has been remanded in judicial custody.
