Assam: Dr. Nomal Chandra Borah, Founder of GNRC Universal Health Mission and GNRC Group of Hospitals, has been honored with two prestigious national Lifetime Achievement Awards, a significant recognition of his five decades of contribution to healthcare in India.

These accolades, bestowed by the Indian Academy of Neurology (IAN) and the Association of Nurse Executives (India) (ANEI), acknowledge Dr. Borah’s impactful work in neurology, nursing leadership, healthcare education, and community-based health initiatives, particularly in the Northeast.

The award from the Indian Academy of Neurology, the largest professional body for neurologists in the country, recognizes exceptional contributions to advancing neurological science, research, and clinical care. In its citation, the IAN described Dr. Borah’s journey as “an inspiring life story of determination, perseverance, and service,” highlighting his rise from humble beginnings to become one of India’s most respected neurologists.

The IAN commended his role in establishing the first comprehensive neuroscience center in Northeast India, extending neurological services to previously underserved populations, and initiating DNB Neurology training in the region. His work in research, academic publishing, and mentoring young doctors was also lauded, with the Academy describing his contributions as “immense for the state and the nation.”

The second honor, the Lifetime Achievement Award 2025 from the Association of Nurse Executives (India), recognized Dr. Borah’s impact on nursing leadership and healthcare delivery at the national level. ANEI, which represents senior nursing leaders and administrators across the country, hailed him as a “visionary neurologist and dedicated social reformer.”

The citation mentioned his initiatives such as GNRC Medireach, Swasthyamitra, and the Universal Health Mission, which have focused on providing preventive and affordable healthcare to rural and underprivileged communities. ANEI also acknowledged her role in establishing the Asian Institute of Nursing Education in 2004, which has since emerged as a respected institution for nursing education and leadership development.

Responding to these honors, Dr. Borah said, “These recognitions belong to my patients and their family members, colleagues, mentors, students, and the entire GNRC family. I am committed to making healthcare more ethical, equitable, and accessible for all.”
