A Woman Sets an Example of Faith: Builds a Shiva Temple Using Funds from the Mahtari Vandan Scheme

Dhamtari. The Chhattisgarh government’s ambitious ‘Mahtari Vandan Yojana’ is serving as a catalyst for social change alongside the economic empowerment of women. Women from Devpur village—located within the Kharenga project sector of Dhamtari district—have set an inspiring example by utilizing the funds received through this scheme. For a long time, the absence of a temple in Devpur village caused significant difficulties for residents regarding worship and religious ceremonies; consequently, villagers had to travel to neighboring villages to offer prayers on special occasions. Recognizing this predicament, a local resident named Mrs. Nirmala and her fellow women decided to take a proactive initiative.

Nirmala and other women in the village were receiving monthly financial assistance under the Mahtari Vandan Yojana. They collectively resolved to allocate a portion of these funds toward social and religious activities within the village. Pooling their individual contributions from the Mahtari Vandan scheme, the women established a common fund and utilized it to commence the construction of a Shiva temple in the village. This initiative by the women garnered enthusiastic support from other villagers as well. Through these collective efforts, the construction of the temple was completed in a remarkably short time, and a magnificent Shiva temple now stands established in the village. The construction of the temple has not only provided a dedicated space for the villagers’ religious devotion but has also significantly strengthened the spirit of community unity and cooperation within the village.

The village elders and youth alike have lauded this initiative undertaken by the women. Today, collective worship and religious ceremonies—such as those for Mahashivratri, the month of Sawan, and other auspicious occasions—are regularly held in Devpur, fostering an atmosphere of enthusiasm and positivity throughout the village.

This endeavor by the women of Devpur demonstrates that when women unite with determination, they can play a pivotal role in the development of their village and society. By effectively utilizing the financial assistance provided by the Mahtari Vandan Yojana, these women have proven that they are capable of playing a leading role not merely in the welfare of their own families, but in the holistic development of the entire community. This initiative in Devpur is now serving as an inspiration for neighboring villages as well, conveying the powerful message that—through collective effort and a positive mindset—a solution to any challenge is attainable.
