A major step towards disaster management, new SOPs made for women and vulnerable sections.

Madhya Pradesh: A significant initiative has been taken to make disaster relief and rescue operations more sensitive and effective in Madhya Pradesh. Special Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for women and vulnerable groups were developed during a state-level consultation held in the state on Monday.

This initiative was jointly conducted by the Madhya Pradesh State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF) and UN Women. Representatives from various divisions and districts of the state, as well as representatives from Uttarakhand, Bihar, and the Indian Army, participated in the event. Detailed discussions were held on making relief and rescue operations more effective in disaster situations.

The main objective of this consultation was to ensure that women, children, the elderly, the disabled, and other vulnerable groups receive timely and appropriate assistance in the event of a disaster. Experts emphasized that the needs of these groups often do not receive adequate priority during disaster management, exacerbating their difficulties.

The newly formulated SOP clarifies that women and vulnerable groups will be prioritized during relief and rescue operations, including providing them with health care, temporary shelter, food, and psychological support. Instructions for ensuring a safe and inclusive environment in relief camps have also been included.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between SDERF and UN Women on this occasion, aimed at strengthening gender sensitivity in disaster management. This collaboration will also promote training programs, capacity building, and awareness campaigns.

State officials stated that this initiative will make the disaster management system more inclusive and effective. Vulnerable groups, especially those living in rural and remote areas, will directly benefit.

Experts believe that women, children, and the elderly are among the most affected groups during disasters. Therefore, developing separate and specific guidelines for them is a positive and necessary step.

Delegates present at the event also praised this initiative and said that this model could serve as an example for other states. It was also stated that disaster management should not be limited to immediate relief, but should also include human sensitivity and social security.

The state government has indicated that these SOPs will soon be implemented in all districts and relevant agencies will be trained accordingly to ensure a quick and effective response in times of disaster.
