Indian Women’s Cricket: New score record set

Sports: On Saturday, India posted the highest team score in women’s Test cricket on the second day of the one-off Test against South Africa, surpassing the previous best of 575/9 set by Australia.

Australia had registered the total in Perth in February, but India achieved the new record when Richa Ghosh struck a boundary off the first ball bowled by Anneri Derksen to open the innings on 109.

Much of the credit for the feat goes to Indian openers Shafali Verma (205) and Smriti Mandhana (149), who put on an iconic 292-run partnership, the highest opening partnership in women’s cricket.

They have received good support from Jemimah Rodrigues (55) as well as skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Richa, who are currently unbeaten after their respective half-centuries.

On the first day, India had registered their highest single-day score in a Test match with 525 for 4, breaking the previous record set by Sri Lanka men’s team (509 for 9) against Bangladesh in Colombo in 2002.
