Shortage of doctors causes problems at Nurpur hospital

Specialized healthcare services at the 200-bed Civil Hospital in Nurpur have suffered another setback, with the departure of a third specialist doctor within a month, further straining medical care in the area.
Earlier this month, a dermatologist was transferred to another hospital in Kangra district, while an ophthalmologist joined the Government Medical College, Nahan, as a senior resident. This week, the hospital’s pathologist also joined the same institution for senior residency.
The series of doctor departures has highlighted a persistent shortage of specialist doctors at the interstate border hospital. Residents say that specialist doctors are posted to the hospital for a short period of time and then leave, leaving patients with limited access to specialized care.
When contacted, Dr. Anupama Sharma, Medical Superintendent of the Civil Hospital, confirmed that three specialist doctors had left this month. He further stated that the hospital now has 17 doctors, including 10 specialist doctors, while the hospital has a sanctioned strength of 34.
The current specialists include two physicians, two anesthesiologists, a general surgeon, an orthopedist, as well as specialists in gynecology, ENT, forensic medicine, and microbiology.
