9 people beat up inter-religious couple, 7 accused arrested

Haveri. Here another incident of moral policing came to light. An inter-religious couple was beaten up by nine self-proclaimed religious vigilantes in Haveri district. police provided this information on Saturday. According to the police, the incident took place on Friday in Byadagi town of the district. Following the complaint of the victims, seven people have been arrested, while the search for the remaining two accused is on. The arrested persons were identified as Abdul Khader, Mansoor, Mehboob Khan, Riyaz, Alfaz, Salim Saab and Mehboob Ali. He has been sent to judicial custody.

Haveri Superintendent of Police (SP) Anshu Kumar said that an interfaith couple was attacked by a moral policing gang of nine people from the minority community. Seven accused have been arrested and sent to judicial custody and the search for the other two accused is on. The accused had targeted Ruksana and Jagdish who were talking to each other while riding a bike near the Shiva temple in the town. The mob asked the girl why she was talking to a Hindu and beat both of them. the police has started to investigate.

Former chief minister and BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai had earlier claimed that common people, especially women, “are not able to move around freely without any fear”. Bommai had said, “There has been an increase in cases of rape, torture and violence. Women are not feeling safe even in rural areas… Police remain mute spectators and if they initiate action as per law, they have to face the wrath of the government. Organized gangs are active in Haveri district and there is no fear among them because of the appeasement policy of the Congress government.”
