Yoga festival starts in Tezpur University

Tezpur: To celebrate the spirit of Yoga, Center for Yoga and Sports Sciences, Tezpur University (TU) and National Service Scheme (NSS), TU Wing launched a 51-day Yoga Mahotsav from May 2. The program started with the lighting of the lamp by TU Vice Chancellor Professor Shambhu Nath Singh and other dignitaries present on the occasion.

Delivering the inaugural address as the chief guest, Professor Singh emphasized the importance of yoga for physical, mental and psychological well-being. “These days everyone is talking about physical health by practicing yoga. However, if a person practices yoga seriously, yoga has substantial mental health benefits,” Professor Singh commented. The Vice Chancellor urged the students to practice yoga to discipline their minds.

Professor Papori Barua, Head, (In-charge), Center for Yoga and Sports Sciences informed the distinguished gathering about the number of activities to be organized during the Yoga Mahotsav. “The objective of the festival is to showcase the profound benefits of yoga for a balanced mind,” said Professor Baruah.

During the inaugural ceremony, guest faculty Nagendra Kumar Jain from Center for Yoga and Sports Sciences, yoga instructor Partha Pratim Das and TU students demonstrated various asanas, meditation and pranayam. Prayers were also offered by the students during the program.

The 51-day long festival included many activities like meditation camps, seminars, dhauti camps, vlogging competitions etc. Delivering the vote of thanks, Dr. Amiya Kumar Das Program Coordinator, NSS, TU Wing mentioned that all the activities will go ahead for the celebration of the 10th International Yoga Day to be celebrated on 21st June.
