New Delhi: On Monday, in Begumpur of the capital Delhi, a DTC conductor burnt his wife alive by sprinkling kerosene on her for not declaring his property. The deceased woman was a teacher in MCD school. The accused tried to make the murder an accident by saying there was a leak in the gas line, but the incident was revealed by the testimony of the couple’s 12-year-old daughter.
Jyoti, a resident of Kanjhawala, was married to Rajveer, a resident of Jhajjar, in the year 2009. After some time of marriage, Jyoti got selected as a teacher in MCD school. The family lived in a house located in Jain Nagar. Jyoti’s brother Ashish told that she was suffering from polio. The couple has two daughters aged 12 years and one and a half years. According to Ashish, Rajveer was a conductor in DTC at the time of marriage, but he rarely went to work. He had also kept Jyoti’s ATM card etc. with him.
The police officer said that Rajveer often beat his wife and children. He wanted Jyoti to transfer the property purchased in her name to him. On Thursday, he had threatened to kill Jyoti in front of her parents. The police officer said that at around 7 am on Monday morning, Rajveer sprinkled kerosene on Jyoti and set her on fire. She couldn’t even run away because she was suffering from polio. After being engulfed in flames, she started making noise and both the children also got up. While saving their mother, 12 year old daughter Avika and one and a half year old Anshu also got burnt. Rajveer, surrounded by flames, came running outside and told the people that the fire had started due to leakage in the IGL pipeline.
Two fire engines brought the fire under control and took all the injured to Maharaja Agrasen Hospital, but by then Jyoti had died. The condition of both the daughters is out of danger, but the accused Rajveer has suffered 40 percent burns, hence he is admitted in the hospital. When the police interrogated Avika, she told the whole story. The police handed over the body of the woman to the family members after postmortem, after which her last rites were performed in the evening.
