WFI ad hoc committee announced

New Delhi: The ad-hoc committee of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Friday announced that they will conduct selection trials for the Indian wrestling team for the upcoming Olympic Qualifiers and Asian Championships. 10 to 11 March. “The trials were earlier announced to be held on February 27-29,” the ad-hoc committee said in an official statement. “However, the trials were postponed due to unavoidable circumstances delaying the conduct of the 2023 Senior National Championships.”

The trials of women wrestlers will be held at NSNIS Patiala and the trials of Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestlers will be held at SAI Sonipat. The winner of the trials in the Olympic weight category will get a chance to represent India in the upcoming Olympic qualifiers such as the Asian Olympic Qualifiers (April 19-21) and World Olympic Qualifiers (May 9-12).

The winner in the non-Olympic weight category will represent India at the Senior Asian Championships (April 11-16). The runners-up in the Olympic weight category at the trials will represent India at the Senior Asian Championships. Antim (53kg WW) will be given a direct entry to play at the 2024 Senior Asian Championships. India has so far secured an Olympic quota in the 53kg WW category by virtue of its bronze win at the 2023 Senior World Championships in Antim. Indian wrestlers can still grab the 17 quotas on offer (5 in women’s wrestling, 6 in Greco-Roman and 6 in freestyle). (ANI)
