Kolkata: Political turmoil has erupted in the state after the arrest of TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan, the mastermind of the attack on ED and CAPF officers. The ruling TMC has given full credit to the police for Shahjahan’s arrest and also reiterated that this arrest was done on the orders of Calcutta High Court Chief Justice T.S. This has been possible after Shivagananam removed all the obstacles coming in the way of arrest. Hours after Shahjahan’s arrest, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh claimed that due to the efforts of party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, the court removed all legal hurdles, which allowed the police to arrest Shahjahan. Along with this, he demanded that CBI should now take steps towards arresting opposition leaders in West Bengal. Suvendu Adhikari should be arrested in the Narada Video case and Mithun Chakraborty in the chit-fund entity Alchemist Group case.
Ghosh said that I am confident that now Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accused of sexual exploitation of female wrestlers, will also be arrested. Apart from this, ED should also tighten its grip against those who do not return the loan. At the same time, former CPI(M) MLA from Sandeshkhali Nirpada Sardar said that TMC is glorifying the police in this arrest case, but the truth is that this arrest took place after the strong comment of the Calcutta High Court. He has been saying from the beginning that Shahjahan is in Sandeshkhali.
Sardar, who was arrested on charges of instigating the local people and later released after the intervention of the High Court, said, “I have been saying from the first day that Shahjahan is in Sandeshkhali. Many local people have seen him, but the police have not seen him. I also kept saying that unless the green signal is given by TMC, the way for his arrest will not be paved. Now when the ruling party felt that he should be arrested, this happened.”
Reiterating Sardar’s allegations, BJP national vice president and Lok Sabha member Dilip Ghosh said that the police was aware of Shahjahan’s whereabouts and had given him shelter, now the police had no other option but to arrest him. Governor CV Anand Bose has expressed satisfaction over the arrest of Shahjahan. “I am happy that things are now moving in the right direction,” he said.
