Water in Hirakud dam of Odisha rises, 9 gates to be opened on July 28

Sambalpur: Water in Hirakud dam is rising with each passing day. The water level is rising due to heavy rain in the upper catchment area, said reports on Friday. Reports say that nine gates of the reservoir are set to be opened on July 28. Currently the water level of the reservoir is at 604.75 cusecs.

According to reports, 1 lakh 42 thousand 322 cusecs of water is entering every second in the Hirakud Dam. 33 thousand 657 cusecs of water is being discharged. Hirakud Reservoir authorities have informed that the Hirakud Sluice Gate may open if the water level increases further and as many as nine gates shall be opened on July 28.

Due to the continued monsoon rains in the state for the past few days, the water level of Hirakud Dam has been gradually increasing. The rivers are also overflowing. Therefore, there is fear in the minds of the people about the increase in the dam water and subsequent floods.

Meanwhile, heavy rains continue in the state. Heavy to very heavy rain is expected at some places in Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri districts tomorrow. Similarly, there is a possibility of heavy rain in some places of Nuapada, Balangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Gajapati, Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri, Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur districts.

Further there has been a fresh low pressure in Bay of Bengal which is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rain fall in the entire sate of Odisha said the MeT Department in its lates weather update.
