Vigilance tightened along Manipur’s border with Myanmar

Imphal (IANS) | Amid reports of clashes between the Myanmar Army and the People’s Defense Force near the Indian border, the Manipur government has deployed additional security forces and asked the Assam Rifles to maintain a tight vigil along the international border. An official gave this information on Sunday. Security has been tightened along the Indo-Myanmar border near Manipur to avoid untoward incidents, a senior police officer said. So far, there are no reports of Myanmar nationals coming to Manipur due to clashes there.

According to security and district administration officials, round-the-clock foot patrolling has been intensified along the international border.

Besides this, additional forces including Manipur Rifles, police and other security personnel have also been deployed.

Myanmar’s Tatmadaw (army) has frequently engaged in armed conflict with civilian forces since military junta seized power in the neighboring country in February 2021.

Manipur has an unfenced border of about 400 km with Myanmar, which is the main source of smuggling of drugs, gold, exotic animals, poppy seeds and other contraband items.
