Vegetable waste to be converted into CNG in Bhubaneswar

Odisha: In a major step towards sustainable waste management, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has signed an agreement with Nexband Renewables to produce compressed natural gas (CNG) from vegetable waste generated in the city. This initiative aims to reduce the capital city’s waste burden and promote clean energy production through scientific waste processing methods.

Under the agreement, the BMC will supply approximately 50 metric tons of vegetable waste daily, although the quantity may vary depending on the season. The waste will be collected from designated locations across the city and transported to the company’s compressed biogas plant in Begunia.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed at the BMC headquarters in the presence of Mayor Sulochana Das, Commissioner Chanchal Rana, and other senior officials and corporators.

The BMC is the first urban local body in Odisha to enter into such an agreement to convert wet waste into CNG.

Currently, the civic body processes segregated waste through micro composting centers and material recovery facilities. With this new initiative, efforts are being accelerated to adopt advanced and scientific methods for extracting energy from organic waste.

This project is expected to significantly reduce the load on the Temporary Transfer Station by diverting biodegradable vegetable waste for processing. This will also facilitate waste collection from markets, improve cleanliness in commercial areas, and ensure efficient use of organic waste. Odisha Tourism Guide

Officials said that this initiative will help reduce transportation costs and operational difficulties associated with waste management. It will also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote a clean urban environment, and support sustainable resource use.
