Madurai: The Transgender Resource Centre in collaboration with Omega Forum for Social Impact has launched the ‘Vaadivam’ programme. Under the project, special help desks will be set up in government hospitals with special transgender wards. The inaugural ceremony held in Madurai on Friday was presided over by Omega’s CSR head. According to sources, the project aims to set up special help desks in such hospitals across the state to guide transgender persons seeking treatment in the special ward and thus reduce their difficulties. Madurai-based transgender activist Priya Babu said that currently four government hospitals in the state provide special medical assistance like plastic surgery for transgender persons. She said, “Every Thursday the transgender ward will provide medical assistance for people from the community. Often, many transgender persons visiting the hospital face difficulties in understanding the procedures of the special ward and the process of submitting documents. In Madurai, the Transgender Resource Centre has so far been providing assistance to trans persons visiting the hospital.”
