Bulawayo: Henil Patel bowled brilliantly, taking five wickets, as India defeated the USA by six wickets in a rain-affected ICC Under-19 World Cup opener here on Thursday. The right-arm seamer took 5 for 16 in seven overs, with one maiden, dismantling the USA middle-order after India opted to bowl in overcast conditions. USA was bowled out for just 107 in 35.2 overs. After rain interrupted play, India’s target was reduced to 96 in 37 overs, with a total of 21 for one in four overs. Abhigyan Kundu (42 not out off 1 ball) then led the team to victory with 118 balls remaining under the DLS method. Rain delayed India’s chase, but when play resumed, 14-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi (2) was dismissed cheaply, bowled by Ritwik Appidi (2/24 in 5 overs) in the third over. Appidi forced Suryavanshi to make room with a length delivery, but before the batsman could come towards the wicket, the ball took an inside edge and hit the stumps. Captain Ayush Mhatre had hit two fours by then and was brimming with confidence until rain interrupted play again. At that point, India needed just 87 runs from 46 overs, but when play resumed after a long break, the equation changed according to the DLS method. Upon resumption of play, India lost Mhatre (19) and Vedant Trivedi (2) in quick succession, followed by vice-captain Vihaan Malhotra for 18. Earlier, Heinil had Malhotra caught at slip by Amrinder Gill (1) in his very first over. Then, tall fast bowler Deepesh Devendran had Sahil Garg (16) caught by Heinil at third man, reducing USA to 29/2 in nine overs. Heinil then took control of the innings with a stunning double blow, dismissing captain Utkarsh Srivastava five balls later and then wicketkeeper Arjun Mahesh (16) in the same over, reducing USA to 35/4. He soon returned, taking his third wicket by holing Mahesh’s loose drive to third man, and USA never recovered from this collapse. Leg-spinner Khilan Patel dismissed Amogh Arepalli (3) on his debut, reducing USA to 39/5 in the 16th over. Nitish Sudini made some rescue work, scoring 36 off 52 balls, including four fours, and added 30 runs for the sixth wicket with Adneet Jhamb (18) to take USA past 50. However, Henil came back to dismiss Sabareesh Prasad (7) and Rishabh Shimpi (0) to complete his five-wicket haul, dismissing USA in 35.2 overs. India are in Group B with Bangladesh and New Zealand. Brief scores: USA 107 in 35.2 overs (Nitish Sudini 36; Henil Patel 5/16) vs India. India: 99/4 in 17.2 overs (Abhigyan Kundu 42 not out; Ritwik Appidi 2/24).
