Delhi: The ‘Darbar Hall’ and ‘Ashok Hall’ of Rashtrapati Bhavan have been renamed. It has now been renamed as ‘Ganatantra Mandap’ and ‘Ashok Mandap’. A statement said that Rashtrapati Bhavan, the office and residence of the President of India, is a symbol of the nation and an invaluable heritage of the people. The word ‘Darbar’ refers to the courts and assemblies of Indian rulers and the British. After India became a republic, it lost its relevance i.e. ‘Ganatantra’. The concept of ‘Ganatantra’ is deeply rooted in Indian society since ancient times, hence ‘Ganatantra Mandap’ is an apt name for the venue.
