Trilingual scheme: CBSE orders implementation in schools within a week

Tamil Nadu: The CBSE has ordered CBSE schools to implement a three-language curriculum from Class 6 within a week.
In this regard, Pragya M. Singh, Director of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), has sent a circular to all types of schools: The National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSC-2023) emphasizes the importance of multilingual skills. It also recommends teaching two out of three Indian languages in a three-language scheme to improve students’ language proficiency, cultural understanding, and national integration. Accordingly, the curriculum for the 2026-2027 academic year has now been released.
Accordingly, the three-language program will be introduced from Class 6 onwards, starting in the 2026-2027 academic year. It has also been learned that many schools have already started implementing the three-language program based on the new curriculum.
Other schools that have not yet implemented this scheme should ensure they do so within 7 days of the announcement. Textbooks for the third language will be available soon. Additionally, schools should teach trilingualism from Grade 6 onwards, using local textbooks and teaching resources. Furthermore, schools should finalize the details of their chosen trilingualism program and inform their regional office. The third language a school introduces in Grade 6 will be an optional subject for Grades 9 and 10. Therefore, it is recommended that all schools implement trilingualism without delay.
It is worth noting that these changes are being made in accordance with the National Education Policy.
