Bhubaneswar: BJD President Naveen Patnaik alleged on Friday that tribal people are facing the “greatest neglect” under the BJP government in Odisha.
Patnaik made these remarks after meeting members of the BJD’s Scheduled Tribe (ST) cell following their inaugural meeting. The BJD chief said, “The BJP government is not implementing schemes designed for tribal welfare, such as the ‘Separate Development Councils,’ ‘Anwesha’ (student scholarship program), and others. BJD members must raise their voices and move forward with determination for the cause of the tribals.”
However, a BJP spokesperson dismissed these allegations, claiming that the BJD is “sinking” and is therefore “spreading lies to mislead the people.”
Sudam Marandi, the head of the BJD ST cell and a former minister, apprised Patnaik of the various challenges confronting tribal communities in the state. According to a statement issued by the party, the discussion covered issues such as rising crimes against tribal women and the impact of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2026.
The BJD stated, “Concerns were raised that the new mining law could adversely affect the rights, livelihoods, and land of tribal communities living in mining-affected areas, as well as the development of tribal-dominated regions.” Additionally, the meeting recalled the various significant measures undertaken for tribal welfare, empowerment, and development during Patnaik’s tenure.
