Chennai: A 38-year-old man killed his mother-in-law Latha (40) on Saturday night in Ponneri in Tiruvallur district. Police said the accused Vivek, a resident of Gummidipoondi, had been living separately from his wife Soumya (22) for a year. Meanwhile, Soumya had recently left her maternal home saying she was going to another city to work. But police said she had allegedly eloped with another man with whom she was in a relationship.
Her mother was aware of this, police said. After learning this, Vivek came to his mother-in-law Latha’s house on Saturday night and had a heated argument with her. During the argument, Vivek picked up a knife and allegedly stabbed Latha in the neck. When Latha fainted on the spot, neighbours rushed her to the government hospital in Ponneri, where doctors declared her dead. Ponneri police officials reached the spot and sent Latha’s body for post-mortem. Police then registered a case and arrested Vivek for the alleged murder. He was later taken into custody.
