Then the public will elect the mayor and the chairman, the leader of the opposition got angry on the decision of the government

Raipur: In Chhattisgarh, BJP has geared up for the Panchayat elections and the urban body elections. At the same time, now the election of the mayor and the chairman will be done directly in the urban body elections. That is, along with the councilor, the public will also vote for the mayor and the chairman. Congress is fiercely attacking this decision taken in the meeting of the Sai Cabinet. A big statement of the Leader of Opposition Charandas Mahant has come out on the direct system of urban body elections.

Leader of Opposition Charandas Mahant said that, nowadays it has become a hobby to change the decision of the previous government. Whether the decision is good or bad, it has become a hobby to change it. Leader of Opposition Charandas Mahant challenged the ministers and said that the ministers should tell 5-5 works in the bodies of their respective areas? Which the ministers would have done in the last 1 year? Then the ministers should talk about being entitled to victory.

On the other hand, on Mahant challenging the ministers before the civic elections, Deputy CM Vijay Sharma said that Mohammad Akbar did not do any development work in Kawardha. I am telling not 5 but countless works done in my assembly. The public is watching the work of Congress for 5 years and our work for 1 year. Let us tell you that on December 2, a cabinet meeting of the Chhattisgarh government was called, in which many important decisions have been approved. In this meeting, mainly a decision has been taken on the civic elections. The cabinet has decided to conduct the election of mayors and chairpersons in the urban body elections through direct system.

In the cabinet meeting, it has been decided to conduct the election of mayors of municipal corporations and presidents of municipalities of the state through direct method. For this, in the meeting, the draft of Ordinance 2024 was approved regarding amendment in various sections of Chhattisgarh Municipal Corporation Act, 1956 (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024 and Chhattisgarh Municipality Act 1961 (Amendment) Ordinance 2024 (Provisions related to direct election and reservation).

It is worth mentioning here that in the undivided Madhya Pradesh state, before 1999, the election of the Mayor of Municipal Corporations and the President of Municipal Councils was done directly. The then government had decided to conduct the election of the Mayor of urban bodies and the President of Municipal Councils indirectly, the notification of which was published in the Gazette on 12 December 2019.
