The Tamil Nadu SIR case will be heard today – SC

Tamil Nadu: Supreme Court Chief Justice Surya Kant said on Wednesday that the petitions filed against the special revision of the electoral roll in Tamil Nadu would be heard today (January 29).
DMK Organizing Secretary R.S. Bharathi had filed a petition in the Supreme Court on November 3, 2025, against the ongoing Special Intensified Revision (SIR) of the voters’ list in Tamil Nadu.
The petition stated that there were several irregularities in the special radical voter revision process in Bihar. The Supreme Court has not yet issued a final order in the case filed in this regard. In this context, the radical voter revision in Tamil Nadu is against democracy. Elections are due soon in Tamil Nadu, therefore, conducting a special radical revision of the voter list is unacceptable. It was argued that due to the Christmas and Pongal festivals falling during the period when the special radical revision of the voter list is being conducted, voters who were left out of the process and those who wish to be added to the list will face difficulties, and consequently, they will lose their right to vote.
Similarly, the Tamil Nadu Vijay Party, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President K. Selvam Perunthakai, CPM Tamil Nadu State Secretary P. Shanmugam, and others have also filed petitions in the Supreme Court against the SIR proceedings.
The AIADMK has filed a petition in support of the SIR proceedings.
Similarly, petitions were filed in the Supreme Court against the ongoing SIR operations in other states, including Kerala, West Bengal, and Puducherry.
In this situation, the petitions filed in the Bihar SIR issue were heard in the Supreme Court on Wednesday before the bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant.
At that time, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for R.S. Bharathi, stated that like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu has also faced several problems in the SIR process.
Since there is a problem with the SIR issue in Tamil Nadu, the case should be heard immediately. The draft list of voters may be published on the thirtieth, therefore, the case should be heard on Thursday (January 29), Chief Justice Surya Kant appealed during the session. To this, Chief Justice Suryakant said, “Okay, we will hear the case on Thursday (January 29).”
