Shimla: Video of dog carrying human leg near Chamiyana Hospital goes viral

Himachal Pradesh: Management at the Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialities (AIMSS) in Chamiyana, Shimla, has taken cognizance of a video showing a dog holding a human leg in its mouth. Management has issued show-cause notices to the sanitation staff and supervisor, stating that further action will be taken after receiving their responses. Hospital management took action after a dog was seen carrying a human leg in its mouth near the hospital campus, causing panic among the public. A video of the incident also went viral on social media. Upon receiving the information, officials formed a fact-finding committee consisting of Nursing Superintendent Lilavati, Nodal Officer for Biomedical Waste, Rajesh Verma, and Matron Lila Bodh to investigate the matter. The committee was tasked with fixing responsibility and identifying shortcomings to prevent such a horrific incident from happening again. The committee’s report revealed that on February 19th, a patient in the CTVS department had his leg amputated above the knee. The amputated limb was packed in a proper waste bag at the AIMSS biomedical waste complex for further disposal by the biomedical waste disposal agency (Enviro Engineers). However, on the night of February 21st, while bringing the biomedical waste to the biomedical waste complex, sanitation workers left the door open and unattended, possibly causing a dog to remove the amputated limb from the bag. The next day, an empty bag was found outside the biomedical waste complex. Sanitation workers tried to find the missing body part but to no avail. However, today a dog was seen with a leg in its mouth. When security personnel tried to remove it, the dog became enraged and ran away. The cleaning contractor has also been directed to ensure proper storage and disposal of biomedical waste as per the guidelines and the biomedical waste disposal agency has been directed to remove the biomedical waste from the hospital premises in a timely manner.
