The MLA has sought the public’s cooperation to keep Daporijo clean.

DAPORIJO: Local MLA Taniya Soki urged every resident to contribute towards making Daporijo one of the cleanest towns in the state, saying that maintaining cleanliness is a collective responsibility.

Addressing an awareness-cum- consultative meeting here in Upper Subansiri district on Friday to discuss the growing garbage and waste management problem in Daporijo town, Soki particularly appealed to the youths, women’s groups, and community-based organisations to extend their support.

He also expressed concern over Daporijo’s image as one of the dirtiest towns in the state.

The MLA said that, instead of imposing penalties on people found littering, greater emphasis should be placed on raising awareness about the importance of cleanliness, hygiene, and public health. He said that behavioural change through education and awareness can bring long-term results.

It was also noted during the meeting that, although several cleanliness awareness programmes had been launched by the district administration, NGOs, and other organisations in recent years, the desired outcomes have yet to be achieved.

During the marathon discussion, a detailed presentation on waste management was made, highlighting the challenges faced in garbage collection, disposal, and the urgent need for a sustainable waste management system. The participants exchanged views, experiences, and suggestions to tackle the increasing garbage dumping issue in the town. They also called for greater public participation, stronger community ownership, and coordinated efforts from all sections of society to effectively address the waste management challenge in Daporijo.

The meeting was convened by the Upper Subansiri district administration, and was attended by Deputy Commissioner Tasso Gambo, ZPM Yater Nasi, officials of the Urban Development and Housing Department, the TCS women wing president, community leaders, and other stakeholders.
