Tamil Nadu: The Medical Council of Tamil Nadu has warned that strict legal action will be taken if non-medical practitioners perform hair transplant and skin lightening treatments.
A hair restoration treatment center operating under the name “Mr. Ho” in Anna Nagar, Chennai, was found to be performing hair transplant treatments through fake doctors. Following this, three individuals were arrested and the treatment center was sealed.
In response, the State Medical Council Registrar issued a notification on Friday, citing National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines. It states:
The NMC Ethics Committee has issued clear regulatory guidelines for hair transplant treatment and skin rejuvenation in 2022. The Directorate General of Health Services has also set minimum standards for such treatments. These guidelines were developed to prevent injuries and deaths resulting from unsafe treatments performed by unqualified practitioners. Following these guidelines, the Tamil Nadu Medical Council is also issuing certain directives.
According to this, hair transplants and laser skin treatments should only be performed by approved doctors registered with the Medical Council. Such treatments should only be provided in centers licensed under the Medical Institutions Registration Act. Treatment documents must be properly maintained. The Public Health Department will continuously monitor and inspect such treatment centers.
If it is found that treatment is being provided outside the established procedures without approved medical qualifications, strict legal action will be taken against the individual and the institution concerned.
The notification states that registered doctors must follow the appropriate regulations when providing such treatments.
