Elections to the Sikkim Assembly and Lok Sabha will be held on April 19, the first of seven phases in the 2024 general elections.
“The President of Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) and the Chief Minister of Sikkim are also fully prepared to form the next government through the election process,” said Jacob Khaling, political secretary to Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Gole).
Gole was successful in ousting Sikkim D Democratic Front (SDF) president Pawan Kumar Chamling in the 2019 assembly elections. Chamling was the Chief Minister of Sikkim from 1994 to 2019.
Many believe that the fight for the 32-seat assembly and the sole Lok Sabha seat in Sikkim is likely to be between the parties of Golay and Chamling.
However, many believe that the newly formed Citizen Action Party (CAP) could be a dark force in the upcoming elections.
A political observer said, “CAP’s performance will affect the final result in some assembly constituencies of Sikkim.”
Chamling on Saturday urged the people of Sikkim to come out and vote on April 19.
Chamling said, “If citizens fail to use the power to vote responsibly, the election process will not only be meaningless but will also bring more destruction and chaos by putting the future of the state in the hands of the wrong government.”
In the recent Rajya Sabha elections, BJP’s D.T. The Lepchas won, largely because Gole’s SKM supported them.
