Telangana: Six bike riders fall victim to deadly ‘Chinese manja’

Hyderabad: 22-year-old M. Madhu’s motorcycle hit a sharp nylon string strung across the road near a mall in Yacharam Mandal, causing serious injuries to his neck and hands. In another incident, 33-year-old G. Veeraiah suffered severe neck injuries after being struck by a Chinese manjha string while crossing the Amberpet flyover. Police said both victims are undergoing treatment at private hospitals.

They are among six motorcyclists, including a police constable and a student, who suffered serious neck injuries in separate incidents across the city over 13 days.

On December 30, 29-year-old T. Ashok was struck by a glass-tipped manjha string while passing near a theater in Saidabad. Traffic constable M. Kranthi saw him bleeding profusely and rushed him to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. On December 29, the deadly manjha nearly killed M. Jameel, a food delivery executive in Shamsheerganj. The rough thread wrapped around his neck, causing a deep wound. He was taken to a private hospital, where doctors had to apply 22 stitches.

On December 26, B.Tech student Jaswanth Reddy suffered serious neck injuries while riding a bike in the Keesara police station area. He is still under medical observation at a private hospital. On December 25, Shivraj, posted at the Langer House Traffic Police Station, was injured when synthetic thread got entangled in his neck while commuting on the Tilak Nagar-Narayanguda flyover.

Despite a ban on the sale and use of synthetic thread due to its potential to be fatal to humans and birds, its use continues unabated ahead of the Sankranti festival. Police have warned commuters, especially two-wheeler riders, to be extremely cautious while using flyovers and open roads.
