Nalgonda: Sanitation services in the Nalgonda Municipality have come to a standstill as over 300 sanitation workers went on strike since Thursday morning. The sudden halt in garbage collection has led to massive garbage accumulation across the city, raising health concerns among residents. In the city, which generates about 300 metric tonnes of waste daily, heaps of uncollected waste have piled up in the market area and main roads. Garbage can rot if left uncollected for more than a day, increasing the risk of disease spread.
The striking workers are demanding their wages, which have not been paid for two months, as well as payment of dues pending for nine months. Led by the local unit of the CITU, the sanitation workers staged a sit-in to press for their demands. Municipal officials have acknowledged the issue but have not yet given any clear timeline for disbursement of funds. Officials have cited administrative delays and budgetary constraints as reasons for the pending payments.
