Assam: Tata Group has started work on its semiconductor plant in Assam. The plant will be built at Jagiroad in Morigaon district. Tata Group will invest Rs 27,000 crore in this plant. It is expected to create 30 thousand jobs. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tata Sons Limited Chairman N Chandrasekaran on Saturday (August 3) performed the Bhoomi Pujan of the Semiconductor Testing and Assembly Facility at Jagiroad in Morigaon district. The Tata Semiconductor Plant at Jagiroad is India’s first indigenous semiconductor assembly and testing facility. Both Sarma and Chandrasekaran performed the rituals amid chanting of priests who came from different parts of the country. On this occasion, the Chief Minister presented the 3D model of the Assam Semiconductor Plant and the CM expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and Tata Sons.
Sarma said that it is a “golden day” for the people of Assam and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tata Sons Limited for this plant. The chief minister assured Tata Sons Ltd chairman N Chandrasekaran that the company will not face any difficulty in setting up this plant and the people of Assam will always be grateful for this. Stating that the plant could come up in Assam due to the initiative of the prime minister, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman and electronics minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “We were assured that if Tata is willing to take one step forward, the Centre will take two steps to ensure setting up of the plant in Assam.” Even after the decline in militant activities in the state, very few private companies were keen to invest in the state but Sarma said, “I approached Chandrasekaran, who was then a Tata consultant, to co-sponsor IIIT, Guwahati. He was the director general of services and immediately accepted.”
Tata is already working in several sectors in Assam.
Sarma said Tata is not new to Assam and is working here in several sectors like tea industry, cancer treatment, health care facilities, automotive and now electronics. He said, “Tata could have set up this industry in any state in the country, but they chose Assam and we are grateful for that.” 1,000 girls have been recruited Chandrasekaran said that the Tata Group is committed to providing employment to local youth, with 1,000 girls already recruited and “we are confident that they will build and shape the future of the state and the country.” He also said that former Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata has expressed his best wishes for the project and the people of Assam. 30 thousand people will get employment The Chief Minister’s Office said in another post on Twitter that once the plant becomes operational, it will change the industrial landscape of Assam and will usher in a new era. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of this plant through video conferencing on March 13 this year. Tata Electronics’ next generation project in Jagiroad will entail an investment of Rs 27,000 crore and will provide employment to more than 30,000 people. The first phase of the plant is expected to be operational by mid-2025.
