Tamil Nadu Tamil Nadu: South-West Monsoon has started in Tamil Nadu from June 4. The Meteorological Department has predicted about 80 percent probability of below normal rainfall in the state this year. Keeping this in view, the state government has intensified preparations to deal with the monsoon.
A high-level meeting was held at Chief Minister Joseph Vijay’s secretariat on Friday regarding the monsoon situation and possible challenges. Departmental secretaries and district collectors of the districts of the Western Ghats region participated in this meeting. Precautionary steps to be taken during monsoon and preparations for disaster management were discussed in detail in the meeting.
In the meeting, officials were instructed that all departments and district administrations should be fully prepared to deal with any emergency. The main objective was said to be to ensure that there is no loss of life or property during natural disasters. For this, emphasis was laid on strengthening the monitoring and quick response system at the administrative level.
Officials were also directed to ensure that the district administration and the District Emergency Operation Center remain active round the clock. It has been asked to ensure immediate action on any emergency information, so that there is no delay in relief and rescue operations.
It was also advised in the meeting that special attention should be paid to incidents related to electricity during the rainy season. If any information about falling or damage of power line is received, immediate action should be taken on it. Along with this, instructions have been given to the concerned departments to remain alert and increase monitoring at the field level.
According to the Meteorological Department, in view of the possibility of less rain this year, the agriculture, water resources and disaster management departments need to make special strategies. In case of less rainfall, there may be water crisis and impact on agricultural production, hence planning preparations in advance are said to be necessary.
The government has clarified that the situation in all the districts will be continuously monitored while giving priority to disaster management. Instructions have also been given to deploy special teams in sensitive areas and ensure availability of relief material.
Officials said the state government aims to minimize the impact of any possible disaster. For this, better coordination and faster response system is being developed between all the departments.
Overall, the Tamil Nadu government has increased vigilance in view of the South-West Monsoon and stressed on strengthening disaster management in case of possible deficient rainfall.
