Tamil Nadu: Solar power generation reaches 8.5 GW, target 20 GW by 2030

Tamil Nadu: P. Sivakumar, President of the Solar Energy Producers Association, has reported that the state’s solar power generation capacity currently stands at 8.5 gigawatts (GW). He also stated that the solar energy sector in Tamil Nadu and across India is rapidly expanding and is expected to grow further in the coming years.
This statement was made during the opening ceremony of the 10th South India Renewable Energy Exhibition and Conference, held on Monday at the Nandambakkam Trade Centre in Chennai. The event will continue until Wednesday (April 29). Several industry experts, policymakers, and global representatives from India and abroad attended the event.
Frost & Sullivan Associate Director (Economic Analysis) Neha Thomas, Australian Deputy High Commissioner Chillai Jacky, and Informa Markets Senior Group Director for the Energy Sector Rajneesh Khattar were among the prominent dignitaries present.
Yogesh Mudras, Managing Director of Informa Markets in India, said that Tamil Nadu is rapidly becoming a major hub for renewable energy and energy storage. He added that this sector is creating new opportunities for domestic and international investors.
He explained that by October 2025, renewable energy’s contribution to India’s total installed power generation capacity had reached 39.66 percent, reflecting the country’s energy transition.
P. Sivakumar said that India has set a target of 280 gigawatts of solar energy production by 2030, while Tamil Nadu has set a target of 20 gigawatts. Currently, the state is at 8.5 gigawatts of production, so much work remains to be done to achieve this target.
He suggested that to achieve this target, the state government should promote net metering systems and take steps to reduce network charges, so that industries and businesses can easily adopt and participate in solar energy generation.
He also stated that it is important to raise public awareness about the use of solar energy so that more and more people can move towards clean energy.
The conference also discussed that South India, especially Tamil Nadu, can play a significant role in India’s energy transition in the future, and that investment opportunities in the renewable energy sector are constantly increasing.
