Tamil Nadu: Rooftop solar power added to compulsory purchase category

Tamil Nadu : For the first time, rooftop solar power will be included in the mandatory renewable power purchase category, which includes wind and solar power. Tamil Nadu’s daily power demand is more than 17,000 MW. Although the power demand in Tamil Nadu is met by power from various sources including thermal, gas, hydro and wind, power is purchased and used from central and private companies during times of high demand. The rule in this is that the share of electricity generated from renewable energy sources like wind and solar energy that does not harm the environment should be at a certain level. It included only electricity generated from wind, hydro and solar energy produced by private companies. As per the instructions of the Union Ministry of Power, rooftop solar power is now being included for the first time. According to this, the share of rooftop solar power in the total power purchase for the current financial year should be 2.10 percent. It should be gradually increased to 4.50 percent by 2029-2030. The Electricity Regulatory Commission has issued a draft report in this regard and sought comments from various parties. The Electricity Regulatory Commission has also advised the general public and the industry to give their comments by June 6. In this regard, electricity board officials say that private companies are installing high capacity solar power plants on the ground. Apart from this, homes and companies are installing solar power plants on the roofs of their buildings. The electricity produced in these can be sold to the electricity board after being used by the owner. To promote this, solar power plants have been installed on the roofs. This will reduce the electricity bill of the person. Along with this, the electricity purchase cost of the electricity board will also be reduced.
