Tamil Nadu reviews reopening of schools amid heatwave

Tamil Nadu: In view of the increasing heat and a possible heatwave in Tamil Nadu, the state government has requested a detailed report from the Meteorological Department. Based on this report, a decision will be made regarding the reopening of schools. Education Minister Rajmohan has stated that a formal announcement will be made soon after discussions with the Chief Minister.
Minister Rajmohan presented appointment letters to six sewing teachers selected through the Teachers Selection Board during an event held in Chennai on Monday. Speaking to reporters after the event, he addressed several important issues related to the education sector.
He stated that more awareness programs will be conducted regarding the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) in the state’s schools to increase children’s safety and awareness. Students, teachers, and parents will be provided information on sensitive issues to further strengthen children’s safety.
Regarding changes to the education system, the Minister also stated that the total number of hours for completing school subjects, which was previously 1,050, has now been reduced to 950 hours. The government believes this will balance the study load and make the teaching process more effective.
He also spoke at length about the state government’s nutrition programs for children. The minister stated that breakfast and lunch programs in schools will continue as before. He also stated that efforts are underway to further improve these programs to reach as many children as possible.
He also stated that under the current system, students are provided with a different type of meal every day from Monday to Friday. However, several suggestions and requests for changes to the menu have been received, which the government is considering.
The Education Department states that for the overall development of children, equal attention is being paid to both education, nutrition, and safety. To this end, new policies and schemes are being implemented in schools.
The minister also indicated that, given the weather conditions, final decisions regarding school operations will be made only after consulting the Meteorological Department and discussing with the Chief Minister. Given the severity of the heat, student safety is the government’s primary priority.
Overall, while Tamil Nadu is taking precautions regarding the heatwave situation, it is also taking several steps to improve the education system and ensure the well-being of children.
