Tamil Nadu Tamil Nadu: Revenue and Disaster Management Minister K.A. Sengottaiyan has clearly stated that the construction of Mekkadathu Dam will not be allowed under any circumstances. He gave this statement during a tree plantation program organized at a private school in Gopi on the occasion of Environment Day. He participated in this program as a special guest and also honored the farmers who planted large number of saplings.
Talking to journalists after the program, Minister Sengottaiyan also gave information on the policies and development plans of the state government. He said that in the cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, the development works of various departments for the next five years and the data related to them were discussed in detail. The government has given instructions to implement these development schemes expeditiously, so that the public can get benefits as soon as possible.
The minister said the main objective of the state government is to ensure uninterrupted water supply to the public, irrigation and livestock. He said that the government is continuously working in this direction and proper management of water resources is being given priority.
Speaking on the Mekkedathu Dam issue, K.A. Sengottaiyan said that the Tamil Nadu government has been continuously fighting against the Cauvery water dispute and the construction of the proposed Mekkadathu Dam since 1972. He reiterated that the state government will not allow the construction of this dam at any cost.
He also said that the Chief Minister is paying special attention to ensure that the Karnataka government provides Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu without any hindrance. The state government believes that Cauvery water is extremely important for Tamil Nadu’s agriculture, drinking water supply and animal husbandry.
Minister Sengottaiyan also clarified that if necessary, legal steps will be taken to stop the construction of Mekkadathu Dam. The state government is fully alert on this issue and is strengthening its position at all levels.
He further said that the Chief Minister has also informed the Prime Minister about this issue, so that proper attention can be given to this issue at the central level also. The government’s effort is to fully protect the water rights of Tamil Nadu.
Overall, Minister K.A. Sengottaiyan’s statement makes it clear that the Tamil Nadu government is firm on its stand against the construction of Mekkadithu Dam and will not accept any compromise position on the Cauvery water issue.
