Tamil Nadu: Police officers’ leave suspended ahead of Assembly elections; Sandeep Roy Rathore appointed new DGP

Tamil Nadu: The state police department has issued strict instructions to strengthen security arrangements ahead of the April 23 assembly elections. Under the code of conduct that came into effect on March 15, political parties are submitting numerous complaints to the Election Commission, demanding the transfer of officers involved in controversial cases.

In accordance with the Election Commission’s directives, the Tamil Nadu government has transferred several officers within the police department. Furthermore, the Election Commission of India has appointed Sandeep Roy Rathore to the vacant post of Director General of Police. The new DGP, Sandeep Roy Rathore, has intensified security preparations for the assembly elections.

The nomination process in the state has reached its final stages, and political parties’ election campaigns are in full swing. Several national leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, are expected to visit Tamil Nadu in the coming days to campaign. Considering these circumstances, DGP Sandeep Roy Rathore is considering further tightening security arrangements.

As part of the security enhancement, leave for officers in the Tamil Nadu Police Department has been suspended. The IG, General Division, on behalf of DGP Sandeep Roy Rathore, issued a circular. It states that no police officer will be permitted to go on leave during the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections without the DG’s prior permission. This includes all types of leave, including casual leave, earned leave, and medical leave. All previously approved leave has also been cancelled.

The circular also states that officers’ tour plans should be sent to the DG for approval. All officers on tour must immediately return to their headquarters and resume duty. This directive will be mandatory until the Assembly elections are over.

The circular has been specifically sent to the DGP of Railways, DGP of the Armed Forces, DGP of the Cyber Crime Wing, DGP of the Intelligence Wing, all ADGPs, all IGs, and all Police Commissioners. Its purpose is to ensure that the entire police force remains active during the elections and that there are no lapses in security arrangements.

The strict security arrangements in the state are aimed at ensuring fair elections between political parties and minimizing the possibility of any disturbance or violence during the voting process. Under the supervision of DGP Sandeep Roy Rathore, the Tamil Nadu Police is fully prepared and has been instructed to remain vigilant in all areas during the elections.

Strict action, including the suspension of leave and transfer of officers, has been taken to strengthen security arrangements ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. This step reflects the commitment of the State Government and the Police Department towards the Election Commission’s Code of Conduct and conducting fair elections.
