Tamil Nadu leads South India in terms of treatment in government hospitals, NSI report released

Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu has the highest rate of patients seeking treatment in government hospitals in South India, according to the latest state-wise data released by the National Statistical Institute (NSI). This report is based on the utilization of government and private healthcare services in the country.

According to the data, in the past year, 47.5 percent of people in rural Tamil Nadu received treatment in government hospitals, while in urban areas this figure was 38.6 percent. Together, 43 percent of the state’s population received treatment in government hospitals, the highest in South India.

This NSI data also compares with other southern states. According to the data, 26.9 percent of people in Andhra Pradesh, 30 percent in Kerala, 29.8 percent in Karnataka, and 29.3 percent in Telangana received treatment in government hospitals. However, this figure was even lower in western states, with 25.9 percent in Gujarat and only 18.6 percent in Maharashtra receiving treatment in government hospitals.

This report clearly shows that Tamil Nadu leads South India in terms of utilization of government health services. According to experts, this situation reflects the improved access to public health facilities in the state and the increasing reliance of people.

Tamil Nadu Public Health Minister M. Subramaniam, reacting to the report, said that due to the state government’s various welfare schemes and expansion of health services, more people are turning to government hospitals. He stated that the government’s goal is to provide accessible and free health services to people from all walks of life.

He also pointed out that schemes like Ayushman Bharat and the state government’s free medical schemes have increased public confidence in both rural and urban areas. Consequently, the number of patients seeking treatment in government hospitals is steadily increasing.

Health experts believe that this data also reflects the state of the public health system in the country and people’s dependence on health services. The continuously improving health services in Tamil Nadu are considered a major reason for this high utilization rate.

After the release of this report, the discussion on the health system and the role of government hospitals in the state has started once again.
