Tamil Nadu: A special ceremony was held on Monday at Haji Karutha Rowther College in Uthamapalayam to honor Meenakshi Sundaram, a Kirti Chakra awardee and soldier hailing from Kamayagoundanpatti near Cumbum in Theni district. The event was organized to recognize his courage, dedication, and contribution to the service of the nation.
Meenakshi Sundaram joined the Indian Army after completing his B.Com (CA) studies at this very college in 2017. He began his service to the country by joining the Rashtriya Rifles Artillery Regiment. He had aspired to join the Army since his student days—a goal he achieved through hard work and discipline.
A prime example of his valor was witnessed on December 19, 2024, in South Kashmir, when he was critically injured during an encounter with terrorists. Despite sustaining severe injuries to his face and shoulder during the clash, he remained undeterred and eliminated two terrorists. This act of bravery earned him distinct recognition within the security forces.
Following the encounter, he was immediately admitted to the Army Hospital in Delhi, where he underwent treatment for over four months. After a long period of medical care and challenging circumstances, he made a full recovery. In recognition of his courage and valor, the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, honored him with the Kirti Chakra, the country’s prestigious gallantry award.
This honor sparked an atmosphere of pride and joy in his hometown and at his alma mater. Consequently, a special felicitation ceremony was organized at Haji Karutha Rowther College, attended by a large number of teachers, students, and administrative officials.
During the event, College Secretary and Principal M. Darvesh Mohiuddin, Governing Body Chairman S. Mohamed Meeran, and College Principal M. Mohamed Ishaq congratulated Meenakshi Sundaram and lauded his bravery. They remarked that Meenakshi Sundaram has not only brought glory to the college but has also become a source of inspiration for the entire nation. Many college administrators, faculty members, and students attended the ceremony. Everyone hailed Meenakshi Sundaram’s achievement as a source of pride, noting that his story would inspire the youth to serve the nation.
During the event, speakers remarked that soldiers like Meenakshi Sundaram are the true heroes of national security, risking their lives to safeguard the country’s borders. His acts of valor will always be remembered.
Locals also expressed their happiness at the honor, stating that it is a proud moment for the entire region that a young soldier from the area has been awarded the Kirti Chakra, one of the nation’s highest gallantry awards.
