Tamil Nadu: Improvements in Southern Railway’s Traction Power System; 77% Reduction in Faults Recorded

Tamil Nadu: Southern Railway has recorded a remarkable improvement in its Traction Power Distribution (TPD) system over the past year. According to a press release issued by the Railway, the system has now experienced only three faults—a figure representing a 77 percent reduction compared to the previous year.

The press release explained that the Traction Distribution System (TDS) constitutes the core infrastructure through which the Railway supplies power to electric trains. This system is considered the backbone of rail operations, as it ensures an uninterrupted power supply to trains, thereby facilitating smooth operations.

According to Railway statistics, a total of 13 faults were recorded in this system during the year 2024-25, whereas this number dropped to a mere 3 in the subsequent year. The Railway has hailed this improvement as a major achievement.

According to Southern Railway, the primary factors behind this achievement include continuous monitoring, periodic technical oversight, and the concerted efforts of its officials. Priority was accorded to the regular inspection and maintenance of the system, resulting in a significant reduction in technical issues.

Railway officials stated that this improvement has had a direct positive impact on passenger comfort and safety. Punctuality in train operations has improved, instances of delays have decreased, and services on electric tracks have become smoother than ever before.

The Railway further noted that, thanks to the improved power supply system, passengers are now enjoying an uninterrupted travel experience. This has not only resulted in time savings but has also enhanced the overall reliability of railway operations.

Additionally, Southern Railway has announced that further improvement works are currently underway to ensure that no issues arise within the Traction Distribution System (TDS/TPD) in the future. Steps are also being taken to implement technical upgrades and to strengthen modern monitoring systems.

The Railway asserts that its objective is to provide safe, punctual, and uninterrupted rail services, and that it is working continuously toward achieving this goal. This improvement is being viewed as a significant milestone in the Railway’s operational efficiency.
