Tamil Nadu : The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the Madras High Court order imposing an interim stay on the amendment act to appoint vice-chancellors in Tamil Nadu universities.
It said, “There was no need to treat the petition filed by Venkatachalapathy of Palayamkottai against the amendment brought by the Tamil Nadu government as an urgent matter. However, the vacation bench of the Madras High Court heard the petition on May 21 and ordered an interim stay on the government’s legislation on the same day.”
Without conducting a proper inquiry, the Madras High Court passed the order holding the amendment laws unconstitutional. This has resulted in the inability to appoint vice-chancellors in universities that have been running without leadership for over two years.
Therefore, the Tamil Nadu government has requested in the petition that the interim order issued by the Madras High Court on May 21 be stayed.
Earlier, Governor R.N. Ravi had sent these amendment bills to the President without giving assent. The Tamil Nadu government filed a petition in the Supreme Court against keeping the bill in abeyance for a long time without giving any reason. It is noteworthy that while hearing the petition, the Supreme Court used its special powers to approve the bills.
