Tamil Nadu: The Chennai Railway Division has announced a major infrastructure development project for the Arakkonam Railway Station. The project involves expanding and improving the railway tracks and platforms at the station, with a total cost of ₹97.73 crore. The initiative aims to increase the station’s operational capacity and streamline train operations.
A press release issued by the Chennai Railway Division on Wednesday stated that this development was necessary due to the increasing traffic at Arakkonam Station. Currently, express and passenger trains operate on the same track, often causing delays and traffic jams. To address this problem, the new project will create separate tracks for express and other trains.
This change is expected to ensure better coordination and punctuality in train operations. According to railway officials, track separation will not only improve train speeds but also reduce congestion and traffic congestion at the station.
Additionally, platform extensions are a crucial part of this project. Currently, the platform capacity at Arakkonam Railway Station is limited to handling trains with 18 coaches. Platforms 3, 4, and 5 are being expanded to accommodate trains with up to 24 coaches.
Railway officials say this expansion will facilitate the operation of long-distance express trains and provide a better experience for passengers. The increased platform length will also improve safety and security during train stops.
This project will not only benefit passengers but will also strengthen Arakkonam Station’s role within the Southern Railway network. The station is already considered a key junction, serving several major routes.
The Railway Division has stated that this work will be completed in a phased manner, with special attention paid to passenger convenience during construction. Upon completion, the station’s capacity and operational efficiency are expected to significantly improve.
