Ammonia gas leaked from a fertilizer manufacturing unit in Ennore, north of Chennai, on Wednesday and several people were hospitalized. Fuga was produced at approximately 23.45 on 26 December, emitting an odor that caused panic throughout the neighbourhood. More than 25 people in residential areas like Periya Kuppam near manufacturing facilities reported feeling unwell, nauseated and fainting. According to sources, they were later shifted to nearby hospitals. Following news of the gas leak, residents evacuated their homes in panic, gathered on the streets and sought help. Also, the officials of the fertilizer unit would take steps to solve the technical problem. According to ANI, Tamil Nadu’s Medium Environment and Climate Change Minister Meyyanathan Siva V said, “The Coromandel International Limited industry will remain closed until further orders.” Private police assured the public that experts were dealing with the problem and encouraged them to return to their homes, insisting that “there is no problem”. People have protested in Ennore after ammonia gas leak was detected in a submarine pipeline. Health Minister of Tamil Nadu, Hon. Subramaniam met people hospitalized following the ammonia gas leak at a chemical products factory in Ennore.
