Tamil Nadu airport crackdown: 18 arrested in illegal voting case

Tamil Nadu: Security agencies and the Immigration Department have taken major action in a serious matter related to the electoral process in Tamil Nadu. Investigations were conducted at several major airports in the state, including Chennai Airport, to identify individuals accused of illegally voting in the assembly elections despite holding foreign citizenship.

According to sources, this action was taken following the Election Commission of India’s directives, which ordered investigation and action in cases where individuals with foreign citizenship allegedly voted in India.

As part of this investigation, a foreign national was arrested at Chennai Airport, accused of illegally voting in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections. Immigration officials detained him and handed him over to the police.

Furthermore, the investigations were not limited to Chennai; similar levels of surveillance and verification were implemented at Trichy, Madurai, and Coimbatore airports. Passengers returning from foreign travel were screened at all these locations, including fingerprint and identity verification.

According to officials, a total of 18 people have been arrested during this special operation over the past two weeks. All of them are accused of either acquiring citizenship abroad or violating India’s electoral rules by voting while abroad.

The Immigration Department stated that suspicious travelers were identified based on technical data, passport records, and biometric verification. Those who were found to be suspects were subsequently detained and handed over to the relevant police stations.

This entire operation is being considered an important step towards ensuring transparency and security of the electoral system in the state. Officials say that monitoring will be further tightened to prevent such incidents in the future and ensure the purity of the voting process.

The Election Commission has clarified that those who have acquired foreign citizenship are not eligible to vote in Indian elections. Violation of this rule is considered a serious offense, and legal action is provided for in such cases.

Currently, all those arrested are being interrogated and their documents are being thoroughly examined. The police are also investigating whether an organized network or the use of fake documents was involved in this case.

This incident has also sparked discussions about the need to further strengthen airport security and immigration systems to prevent such incidents in the future.
