Talks begin on India-US trade deal

New Delhi New Delhi: Indian and US officials will begin discussions on the proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) in Washington from Wednesday. Its aim is to resolve issues and speed up negotiations. The US says that this agreement will open new markets for American goods and create new opportunities for workers, farmers and entrepreneurs of both countries.

According to the US Trade Representative, the US is considering additional commitments to increase market access, reduce tariff and non-tariff barriers and ensure long-term benefits. The trade deficit between India and the US was $ 45.7 billion in 2024, which will be tried to be reduced through BTA.

The talks cover 19 major chapters such as tariffs, non-tariff barriers and customs facilitation. India’s chief negotiator, Additional Secretary of the Department of Commerce Rajesh Agarwal, is leading the in-person talks for the first time. The two sides aim to complete the first phase of talks by the end of this year, and increase bilateral trade to $ 500 billion by 2030.
