Supreme Court Raises Alarm on Bengal, Places Officer Under Supervision

It is known that the Central Election Commission has undertaken ‘SIR’ (Special Intensive Revision) in West Bengal. The Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal is strongly opposing this decision. The government has criticized the decision to stop ‘SIR’, saying that the voters of their state are facing severe difficulties due to this. CM Mamata is angry with the Central Election Commission (CEC) in this matter. This has led to a dispute between the CEC and the Mamata Banerjee government. It has now reached the Supreme Court.

Responding to this, the Supreme Court made a key suggestion. It directed the Calcutta High Court to appoint district judges or former district judges to monitor ‘Sir’. The court said that these officers will now monitor the disputes and problems between the CEC and the government. The court felt that it had no other option in this regard. The Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court said in his order that these officers should be appointed. Mamata Banerjee recently filed a petition in the Supreme Court regarding this dispute. On Friday, a bench headed by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Suryakant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice Vipul M Pancholi heard the matter and made key comments. The court felt that it was not right for a dispute to erupt between the Central Election Commission and the state government. It objected to constitutional institutions criticizing each other.

The CEC opposed the Mamata Banerjee government’s decision to designate Group B officers as Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) working for it. This is the main reason for the controversy. However, the Supreme Court said that from now on, only judicial officers appointed by the court will work as EROs. This group of judicial officers will monitor the complaints and objections received from voters, the public and the government. They will see to it that names are included and removed from the voter list in each district, and that documents are verified. It has been ordered to provide these officers with assistance in all matters such as transportation, by collectors, SPs and other officials.
