Storm signal intensifies today: Heavy rain warning for Delta and Southern districts

Tamil Nadu: The Meteorological Department has stated that the storm system formed in the South Andaman Sea will strengthen further on Tuesday (November 25) and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm ‘Senya’ within the next 48 hours.

As a result, the Meteorological Department has warned that heavy rainfall is expected in the southern districts, including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Ramanathapuram, on Tuesday (November 25), and in the delta and southern districts on Wednesday (November 26).

Regarding this, P. Amudha, head of the Meteorological Department’s Southern Region, told reporters on Monday: A low-pressure area (cyclonic storm) formed over Malaysia and the adjoining Strait of Malacca on Monday. It will move west-northwestward and strengthen into a low-pressure area over the South Andaman Sea on Tuesday (November 25). It will continue moving in this direction and intensify into a cyclonic storm ‘Senya’ over the South Bay of Bengal on Thursday (November 27).

Another Cyclone Indication: Similarly, due to the existing atmospheric circulation in the Kumari Sea, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the Kumari Sea and the adjacent Sri Lanka-Southwest Bay of Bengal on Wednesday (November 25). It is expected to strengthen further in the coming days.

Two Cycles: Meanwhile, a low-level circulation also formed over the Southeast Arabian Sea on Monday. When two or three cycles form simultaneously, it is normal for them to interact with each other. Thus, the cyclone symbol present in the Malacca Strait and the cyclone symbol forming in the Kumari Sea are likely to converge in the coming days. Therefore, the formation of these two cyclone symbols is being closely monitored. Additionally, due to these weather events, heavy rainfall is expected in Tamil Nadu in the coming days.

‘Yellow’ warning: According to this, light rain is likely at many places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal areas from Tuesday (November 25) to November 30.

Heavy rain is likely in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Ramanathapuram districts on November 25, and in Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Nagapattinam districts on November 26. Consequently, a ‘Yellow’ warning has been issued for these districts.

‘Orange’ warning for Chennai on November 29: Light rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in Chennai and Puducherry areas on Tuesday (November 25). The ‘Orange’ warning has been issued because very heavy rain is likely to continue in Chennai on November 29.

The Northeast Monsoon is intensifying in Tamil Nadu. In the 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Uth in Tirunelveli district recorded the highest rainfall of 230 mm. Nallumaku (Tirunelveli) received 220 mm, Sethiathoppu (Cuddalore), and Kakkachi (Tirunelveli) received 210 mm.

Excess Rainfall: From October 1st to November 24th, Tamil Nadu should have received an average of 330 mm of rainfall. However, this year, 340 mm of rainfall has been recorded, which is 5% more than normal. During this period, Tenkasi and Tirunelveli districts received significantly more rainfall than normal, while seven districts, including Chennai, Tiruppur, Karur, and Salem, received less than normal rainfall.

Fishermen Warning: Winds up to 65 kmph are expected along the Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, the Kumari Sagar, and the Bay of Bengal from November 25th to 28th. Fishermen should avoid fishing in these areas. Fishermen in the deep sea are advised to return to shore immediately, he said.
