State amends GST Bill to bring clarity on gambling tax

The government on Wednesday passed the bill to amend Section 2 of the Goa Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, (Goa Act 4 of 2017) to provide clarity regarding the taxability of casinos, horse racing, and online gaming. Industries Minister Mauvin Godinho, who is also a member of the Goods and Services Tax Council, on Wednesday said that Panaji is a vibrant city depending on casinos, and one cannot imagine what will happen if casinos are removed from the capital city. He was speaking in the Goa legislative assembly during the discussion on the Goa Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The leader of the opposition, Yuri Alemao, questioned the government about the amount of revenue expected from the casino industry through this amendment. Another three bills, which include the Goa Land Use (Regulation) Bill, 2024, the Goa Buildings (Lease, Rent and Eviction) Control (Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Goa VAT (Amendment) Bill, 2024, were passed in the House.
