Sons Donate Eyes Of Parents Killed In Bhubaneswar Road Accident

Bhubaneswar: Setting an example for others, two sons of a couple, who were killed in a road accident at Palasuni Square in Bhubaneswar on May 8, donated the eyes of their parents at a private hospital.

The bereaved sons decided to donate their parents’ eyes with the aim to fulfill their last wish of organ donation and termed it as a small tribute to the couple.

Notably, one Umesh Panigrahi of Anandapur of Subarnapur district and his wife Nalini were killed after a speeding truck ran over them while they were crossing the road at Palasuni Square on May 8. While Nalini died on the spot, the truck dragged Umesh for nearly one km towards Satya Vihar, following which he succumbed to his injuries.

The road accident took place while the couple was going to Puri to mark their 39th wedding anniversary, said sources adding that however they died a day before their anniversary. Their bodies were taken to their native village for the last rites.

The truck driver, however, managed to flee along with the vehicle. On the other hand a probe by the Commisionerate Police is underway.
