Congress leader Rahul Gandhi arrived in West Bengal on Sunday morning to participate in the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, which will resume after a two-day break.
Gandhi was received by West Bengal Congress President Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury at Siliguri’s Bagdogra airport in the northern part of the state.
From Siliguri he will travel to Jalpaiguri district, from where the journey will resume in the afternoon.
The yatra will proceed both by bus and on foot and will halt near Siliguri for the night, he said.
He said that on Monday it will move towards Islampur in North Dinajpur district before entering Bihar.
The Yatra is scheduled to re-enter West Bengal via Malda on January 31 and then leave the state on February 1 after traveling through Murshidabad.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has written a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, urging her to ensure that the program is organized smoothly in the state.
Congress had earlier alleged that some of its banners with Gandhiji were vandalized in Jalpaiguri.
Chaudhary also expressed concern over the hurdles being faced in securing permission to hold public meetings as part of the yatra in the state.
A day before Yatra entered West Bengal, CM Banerjee announced that her party, TMC, would contest the Lok Sabha elections in the state alone and not as part of the opposition faction All India.
The yatra is scheduled to cover 6,713 km in 67 days, passing through 110 districts in 15 states before ending in Mumbai on March 20 or 21.
